The Naghash Ensemble of Armenia in San Francisco

March 25 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm PDT

Led by Armenian-American composer and pianist John Hodian, The Naghash Ensemble bring their entrancing original compositions based on sacred texts by the medieval Armenian mystic poet, artist, and priest Mkrtich Naghash to the stage for their SFJAZZ debut.

Utilizing layered vocals, piano, and traditional instruments duduk, oud, and dhol, the group has recorded three albums and performed worldwide in concerts that bring “a moment of grace and meditation” (Rolling Stone).

Their music transcends boundaries, weaving together intricate melodies and rhythms that reflect the rich heritage of Armenia with modern compositions that skillfully incorporate elements of jazz, classical, and world music, creating a sound that is both timeless and contemporary.

“An enchanting elixir of sounds based on new Armenian folk and centuries-old poetry” – KEXP
