A photographer and his wife take photographs of Armenian churches for use in a calendar. Their driver, a local resident, expounds on the history of the churches while the wife translates. The photographer becomes jealous of his wife's bonding with the driver. In a series of flash-forwards, the photographer stages identical dinners with several women, who pretend to talk on the phone while he writes. His wife, now estranged from him, leaves repeated messages on his answering machine, asking why he never contacts her.ATOM EGOYAN was born in Egypt to Armenian parents and grew up in Western Canada. Both his parents were painters, and he planned to be a playwright, but after making a short film, he became hooked on telling stories visually. Returned to ethnic 'homeland' when he filmedCalendar(1993) in Armenia. Won attention at the Sundance Film Festival for earlier work, then broke through critically and commercially withExotica(1994). Afterwards,The Sweet Hereafter(1997) led him to receive two Academy Award nominations, and thenChloe(2009) became his biggest moneymaker ever.

On View:
One Year: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles
Throughout history, artists have been activists - digging beneath the surface, posing the critical questions, challenging authority and calling the public to action. In today’s contentious climate, LA artists are responding with new urgency, seeking to tell their truth in an era when truth is becoming a precious commodity. Brand Library & Art Center is pleased to present ONE YEAR: The ...Art of Politics in Los Angeles, a group exhibition of over 20 Los Angeles-based artists who have been addressing issues like immigration, race, gender and environment as an integral part of their practice. Conceived and organized by Joey Forsyte, Lawrence Gipe and Alex Kritselis, the selected artists are diverse in culture, identity and age. They present a multiplicity of voices who construct a narrative from a wide range of disciplines including video, painting, drawing, fiber arts, ceramics, mixed media and photography.

The artists of ONE YEAR: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles are united in their desire to inspire awareness, as well as manifest their deep political convictions through their art.

In the late summer of 1894, several battalions of Ottoman soldiers were ordered into the mountains of Sasun, south of the fertile plains of Moush, in current day southeastern Turkey. The entire Armenian population of the region was regarded as rebellious and one to two thousand men, women, and children were murdered. The 1894 violence in Sasun has been viewed quite differently by scholars who work within Ottoman Studies and those in Armenian Studies. The former usually present it as the first major rebellion of Armenian nationalists against the state, while the latter present the 1894 events as the first major episode of Ottoman State mass violence against its Armenian populace. In In his research, Miller has shown that the Ottoman governor relayed intentionally false reports that thousands of Armenian villagers in Sasun had rebelled against the State. After establishing that the Sasun massacre took place, he shows that there was a concerted effort made both by local and central Ottoman authorities to cover it up. In this lecture, Dr. Miller will examine what has been unaddressed by prior accounts of these events along with a detailed account of why the violence took place, and how it is remembered. Dr. Owen Miller is a Postdoctoral Fellow, Consortium for Faculty Diversity, at Union College for 2017-2018. He is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and holds an MA and PhD in history from Columbia University. His 2015 dissertation was entitled “Sasun 1894: Mountains, Missionaries and Massacres at the End of the Ottoman Empire.”

AMONG THE BRIGHTENING BLOOMiscollection of true stories that show what happens when a land ravaged by poverty begins to resurrect. In one corner of Armenia, thirty students came together to learn about and practice the craft of story-writing in a language new to them: English. This initiative – titled Project Bloom – is one of a hundred programs developed by the Children of Armenia Fund. Of the stories in this collection, you will find triumph and disaster, fear and courage, and the everyday ups and downs of adolescence. Most uniformly, however, you will find a group of young scholars with an indomitable spirit and the courage to excel.

Children of Armenian Fund (COAF)began because of an increasingly desperate need. In ten years, an earthquake, blockade, seven-year war, and the collapse of the Soviet Union left hundreds of villages crippled throughout rural Armenia. COAF kicked off its first ground operations in 2004, renovating a single school by leveraging nearby resources – which in turn began to jump-start the local economy. The school was later dubbed a ‘Bloom in the Desert’ as it began to represent a beacon of hope. Following this synchronized approach, COAF now sponsors 44 villages, benefiting over 75,000 men, women, and children with programs that range from agricultural initiatives to medical training. One program that stands out for many is the US-Embassy-sponsored English Access Micro-scholarship Program. This program provides students two years of accelerated training in English comprehension, focusing on speaking and listening. Project Bloom, in a sense, is a logical continuation of the Access Program. Former Access students advanced their literacy through creative exercises, ultimately learning how to express themselves through writing. This training yielded the book that rests in your hands. SAMUEL ARMEN was born in Gyumri, Armenia on October 12th 1988 - just prior to the Gyumri-Spitakearthquake in December 1988. By the age of five, he was adopted into an Armenian-American family in Long Island, New York. His first publications were as an intern journalist for the Armenian newspaper and website HetQ, where among other articles, he published a three-part cover-page narrative detailing his journey to find his biological ancestors. His undergraduate experience includes studying behavioral psychology at Boston University, screen-writing at NYU: Tisch, and English Literature at St. John's University. He received his Masters in Education in Adolescent English at CUNY: Hunter College.
Roslin Art Gallery presentsHOME SWEET HOMEAn exhibit of paintings by Seeroon YeretzianDECEMBER 8-29, 2017Opening reception Friday, December 8 - 7:00pmHOME SWEET HOME presents a collection of art by Los Angeles based artist Seeroon Yeretzian, celebrating a city which gave her wings as an artist and a permanent home. From growing up in a ramshackle refugee camp in Lebanon with Armenian parents who survived Genocide in Turkey, to fleeing civil war and settling in a faraway city such as Los Angeles, Seeroon has often grappled with the idea of home, especially in her early art. In a huge city full of unfamiliar people and spaces, Seeroon found the familiar in the homeless people of skid row whom she approached and interviewed, and in discarded Japanese dolls she found on the streets, in which she found comfort. This was contrasted to the lifeless mannequins tucked away in the cozy reflective showcases of Beverly Hills. This cosmopolitan city is where she blossomed as an artist, ultimately returning to her ancestral roots as a modern master of the art of the medieval illuminated manuscript. Her gift back to L.A. was 'Angel of the Century,' a piece painted in the illuminated art style, depicting angels of different nationalities dwelling in Los Angeles, which was part of the citywide 'A Community of Angels' sculptural project.SEEROON YERETZIAN is an accomplished artist with diverse talents in painting, sculpture, and illustration. Born in 1951 at the Tiro refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon, Seeroon was exposed to both the beauty and suffering of the world. This dichotomy has emerged in her work in what she calls her “Sunshine” and “Moonshine” art. The “Sunshine” pieces are rich in color, showcasing many life-giving earthly elements and produced during daytime. Conversely, the “Moonshine” pieces reflect themes based on personal experiences ranging from the Armenian Genocide to homelessness and self identity. Recognized for reviving the art of prehistoric Armenian petroglyphs and medieval Armenian ornamental art, her masterpieces include the elaborate Four Seasons and her 17 alphabets of different languages executed in the tradition and style of the Armenian ornate initials. Seeroon received her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in 1985 from the Otis-Parsons Art Institute and School of Design. She has authored three books, her self titled art book, Seeroon Yeretzian, her book of poetry, Word Weaving & Black Seat Confessions, and her best-seller, Seeroon Darer: Armenian Ornate Initials. This book served as the artistic inspiration for the design of the Armenian American Rose Float Association’s award winning float in the 126th Annual Rose Parade, entitled, Cradle of Civilization. In 2014, the City of Glendale, California, bestowed upon her its “Lifetime Achievement Award” for the arts. Although she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 2012, Seeroon continues to create to this day. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows and her art is found in private collections and major institutions.ROSLIN ART GALLERY415 E Broadway Ste 100Glendale CA 91205(818) 241-0611Gallery HoursMonday - Saturday 10:00am - 7:00pm
Vahagni & Friends: Fusion of Flamenco & World Music USA, CA-South Glendale Sat, 09 Dec 2017 8pm

Organizer: LA Concert Group - Contact Organizer.
Event Type: Concert / Admission: $30-$50
Location: Stars on Brand 417 N Brand Blvd

Brand Library & Art Center is pleased to present ONE YEAR: The Art of Politics in Los Angeles, a group exhibition of over 20 Los Angeles-based artists who have been addressing issues like immigration, race, gender and environment as an integral part of their practice.

ARTISTS: Kim Abeles, Guillermo Bert, Eileen Cowin, Kohshin Finley, Joey Forsyte, Keiko Fukazawa, Lawrence Gipe, Mark Steven Greenfield, Scott Grieger, Emily Halpern, Nery Gabriel Lemus, Alex Kritselis, Constance Mallinson, Star Montana, Amitis Motevalli, Thinh Nguyen, Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers), Ben Sakoguchi, Alexis Smith, Linda Vallejo, and HK Zamani.
POGHA PETQ - Money Needed! ARMENIAN LIGHTHOUSE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT

We collect in the USA and distribute in Armenia.

Armenian Lighthouse Charitable Foundation (previously known as Paros “Lighthouse” Armenian Charitable Foundation USA), was established in 2009 as a California non-profit Public Benefit Corporation. Lighthouse Foundation was established in 2006 in Yerevan, Armenia. The idea of “lighthouse” established in 1999 by friends and supporters of the Ghazarian Foundation, grew out of their concerns for Armenian women and children and the integrity of the Armenian family. The stark reality is that Armenian women are struggling to adapt to a changing world and experiencing great difficulties maintaining financial and familial stability. For Armenian women with little to no economic financial means, rearing children can be a very difficult task. These difficulties are exacerbated in the context of a violent and/or broken home, where negligence or abandonment of children often remain the only short term solution for Armenian mothers. The number of orphans in Armenia has been growing over the years, and it is no secret that orphanages are ill equipped to meet the demands and every day basic needs of the growing number of orphans. As painful as that may be to those of us in the Diaspora to hear, imagine how painful the lives of these Armenian women and children must be who have to survive such difficulties.

Out of a desire and commitment to do all that they can to address the growing fragility of the Armenian family, Mrs. Seta Ghazarian, Founder of ALCF and chairperson of the Ghazarian Foundation since 1999, and Mrs. Tahlene Gourdikian, Vice Chairman of the ALCF, and a very active member joined forces to develop programs for financially impoverished mothers in Armenia with the long-term goal of helping maintain the traditional Armenian family. The mission of ALCF is to assist married and abandoned women in Armenia who are experiencing great difficulties in maintaining the stability of their children’s lives.

We observed that while several Armenian organizations met the needs of poor children, very few addressed-let alone attempted to assist-the mothers of those children. Building on the premise that a financially and emotionally strong Armenian woman can stand on her own two feet and help maintain the stability of her family, ALCF has directly served the financial and emotional needs of Armenian mothers.

ALCF, therefore, aims to strengthen women and families for a stronger Armenia. ALCF already serves 100 families in Armenia by providing necessary educational, financial and emotional support. With your support, ALCF also plans to provide vocational training and child rearing counseling to Armenian mothers in distress, so that they in turn opt not to enroll their children in orphanages.

With limited resources, ALCF has already made a significant impact in Armenia. It is directly responsible for keeping over 100 children in their homes and out of orphanages. Imagine all the greater good that can be accomplished with your support. ALCF cannot accomplish the goals of the organization and help the children of Armenia without your assistance.Tickets on itsmyseat.com
Handel's Messiah Concert USA, CA-South Los Angeles Sun, 17 Dec 2017 7:00 pm

Organizer: Thomas Sekayan - Contact Organizer. 323-851-5265
Event Type: Music / Admission: Free
Location: United Armenian Congregational Church 3480 Cahuenga Blvd.
On the occasion of the one-hundredth anniversary of the October Revolution, as a theatre artist, as an ‘old student’ of politics and a citizen of the world, I (Aramazd Stepanian) felt it important to acknowledge and reflect upon this major historical and political event. [They say those who do not learn from history repeat it]. Obviously an examination of the subject of the revolution and the USSR—the state that was created as the result— cannot and will not be conducted with one (mainly) theatrical evening. Instead, a presentation will be made limited to Armenia only, and that based on my earliest and deepest impressions of the cultural symbols that represented Soviet Armenia. Short plays, poems, prose and songs that over the years— rightly or wrongly— have helped define Soviet Armenia to an Armenian of the diaspora.
Thirty-five voices strong, the Armenian State Chamber Choir sings repertoire from the choral canon by Gabrielli, Bach, Brahms, and Schnittke, as well as contemporary works by Armenian composers that address the turbulent and often tragic history of the Armenian people. The choir has recorded folk songs by the martyred priest and ethnomusicologist Komitas; and its recording on ECM of Tigran Mansurian's Ars Poetica was praised for its superb ensemble cohesion and blend: 'gorgeous, emotive, and very deeply felt a cappella choral music...fully the product of inspiration' (All Music Guide).
