Final two performances of the MISHIMA PLAYS at Luna Playhouse
A production (In English) of two modern Noh plays by the great (Genius?) Japanese writer Yukio Mishima, one of the most intersting authors of the twentieth century.
In HANJO, a female painter has given shelter to a beautiful mad Geisha girl, who sits at the train station all day, every day, waiting for the man who promised to come for her, and with whom she exchanged fans as a pledge.
Would the man ever come? And why is the artist so concerned?

In THE LADY AOI, a husband is visiting his sick and unconscious wife at the hospital, when the nurse tells him that she has a strange visitor every night—no, not a man, but a sophisticated lady- and whose intentions are unusual, to say the least… And why are her hands so cold?

The evening also includes a KYOGEN, a comic short play and a traditional Japanese song and dance of enchanting beauty.July 15,16,17, 22, 23, 24; 29, 30, 31(Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays) at 8 pmJuly 18, 25 and August 1(Sundays) at 3 pm and 7 pmTickets Thursdays and Sunday Matinees $10Friday, Saturday and Sunday Evenings $15
This summer's campaign will be in the village of Yerdvart, near the
Armenia-Azeri border, in the Syunik
region, south of Yerevan. The nearest city is Kapan.
We will continue the restoration of the 17th century church
discovered near the village.
Work first began in 2007. We will now begin the interior
renovations, while the local 'varbeds' will do the specialized work
required by the historical architects.
This is a small and very rural region of Armenia. Volunteers will
board in the homes of villagers arranged by the LCO and share their
meals with them. There are limited amenities, possibly no hot water or
electricity at times, basic toilet facilities (outhouse).
Evening activities will consist of the volunteers enjoying their
environment. Play soccer with the local children, who will delight in
the rare visit from an outside world, visit villagers for coffee or sing
by campfires. This will indeed be a unique and unforgettable
experience. You will experience a part of Armenia that most visitors
seldom see. The weekend excursions will include some of the most
stunning landscapes in Armenia.
Date:

August Campaign August 2-Aug 30

Volunteers must make their own arrangements to meet in Yerevan by
the campaign date.
Cost: The cost of the campaign is $750. This includes room and
board at the village, local weekend excursions, Yerevan hotel stay and
excursions.
Work conditions: Work will be Monday thru Friday, 9-5,
unless directed otherwise by the architect or group leader. This is
physical labor. LCO representatives, or group leader arranges weekend
excursions. The last 4-5 days of the campaign is spent touring in
Yerevan.

Deadline: Application
is due May 15th, 2010.
For more information: Contact the campaign coordinator through the Contact
Us page.
Abstract:
This
lecture will investigate the desirability and practicality of uniting the
Armenians of Southern California by creating a
central body, called “The Council”. Representatives from all groups and
religious, benevolent, cultural and political organizations will be invited to form
the Council. An outline of the most practical course of action will be
presented and a strategic plan will be discussed to achieve the objectives.

The personal involvement of the Southern
California Armenian community leaders will be solicited and their direct
recruitment will be sought, to join in the work towards making the long time
dream of having a united Armenian body become a reality, one step at a time.

Mr. Harold Avedis DeMirjian received
his formal education in the United
States. He is a graduate of the University of Southern
California, School
of Engineering, with B.S.
and M.S. degrees in petroleum exploration and production technology. He is a
registered professional engineer. Mr. DeMirjian has worked for the Getty Oil
Company, and its predecessors, for over 30 years. His experiences include
drilling of oil wells, production of oil and gas, reservoir engineering,
strategic planning, property acquisition, diversification and applied research.
His last assignment was manager of operations of the international oil and gas
exploration and production division. He has also served as Vice President of
two European Subsidiaries of the Getty Oil Company. He has pioneered, developed and refined a highly successful enhanced
oil recovery process known as Thermal recovery. He is retired since 1985.

During recent years he has consulted in
energy technology and resources application fields. However, he spends most of
his time for charitable and community projects in Southern
California. After the big earthquake of Armenia
in 1988, he visited the Republic
of Armenia over fifteen
times. He supervised an international group, funded through the USAID and
charge d to explore the oil and gas production potential of Armenia. He is
a founding member and treasurer of the ARPA Institute, has served on the Boards
of Directors of the Haigazian University, American Evangelical Schools of Southern California and the United Armenia Congregational Church of LA, as well as on numerous
committees of community organized action
groups.

	My Perestroika
	When the USSR broke apart
in 1991, a generation of young people faced a new realm of
possibilities. An intimate epic about the extraordinary lives of
this last Soviet generation, Robin Hessman’s feature documentary
debut tells the stories of five Moscow schoolmates who were brought
up behind the Iron Curtain, witnessed the joy and confusion of
glasnost, and reached adulthood right as the world changed around
them. Through candid first-person testimony, revealing verité
footage, and vintage home movies, Hessman, who spent many years
living in Moscow, reveals a Russia rarely ever seen on film, where
people are frank about their lives and forthcoming about their
country. Engaging, funny, and positively inspiring, in MY
PERESTROIKA politics is personal, honesty overshadows ideology, and
history progresses one day, one life at a time.
On Thursday, August 12, at 7:00 p.m., Prof. Levon Chookaszian of Yerevan State University will present an illustrated lecture entitled “Expressions of Armenian Identity in the Art of Arshile Gorky” at the Glendale Central Library, 222 Harvard Street (2nd floor), Glendale, CA 91205. The event is sponsored by the Glendale Public Library and co-sponsored by the Ararat-Eskijian Museum, the Organization of Istanbul Armenians, and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR), with the generous support of Vatche and Arlene Sarkoyan.
Arshile Gorky is considered to be one of the key figures in twentieth century art. His painting belongs to the Surrealist movement but at the same time he is seen by some art historians as the first of the Abstract Expressionists.
This lecture will attempt to identify expressions of Armenian identity in some of Gorky’s works. Gorky’s artistic legacy has not yet been completely deciphered. In particular, the expressions of his Armenian identity in his art are still waiting to be explored. The abstraction of forms and his unique iconography make it difficult to understand his art and the Armenian aspects of it. Thus, it is necessary to identify his expressions of “Armenianness” in order to unravel these mysteries. It was his own story that he painted all his life, but he disguised his secret desires through visual camouflage, using signs and symbols known only to him.
Although art critics and scholars have made attempts to make sense of Gorky’s expressions of Armenian identity in his art, there remains a great deal to be done in this area. Our understanding of his paintings and sketches and the meanings of his visual symbols will be more complete if we try to know more about his personal Armenian world.
Prof. Levon Chookaszian is the UNESCO Professor of Armenian Art History, Yerevan State University. He is widely recognized throughout the world as a leading authority on Armenian art and has lectured widely on diverse subjects in this field.

Organizer: Karnig haladjian - Contact Organizer.
Event Type: Volunteer / Admission: $1,500.00
Location: Vanadzor TBD
Dear Friends & Colleagues,

As many of you may know every year since 2006 I've led a global team of volunteers to Armenia to build homes with Habitat for Humanity & the Fuller Center. These builds have been focused on those less fortunate many of whom live with their family's in shipping containers (also known as domiks). You may remember back in late 1989 post the collapse of USSR there was a major earthquake in the Armenia which left many parts of the city in ruins and many without homes. With the collapse of USSR prior to this time many agricultural and manufacturing jobs were lost leaving the overall economy in bad shape. While there has beenconsiderable progress since this time to help those displaced families, there still are many who don't have homes and are forced to live in containers.Thisis why habitat for humanity & fuller center have been focused on hosting teams in effort to someday have a proper house for each family - this is a big goal. What's very unique about these builds is that fuller center requires families to contribute sweat equity along side volunteers making the overall experience that much more meaningful.

I'm excited to once again lead a team a volunteers to the region in effort to build a homefor a displaced family.Have you ever wanted to help those less fortunate and make impact on their lives? Well here's your chance...I'm in process of recruiting former volunteers, friends and/or colleagues who may want to do something different with their vacations this year. This years trip is scheduled for Aug. 26th - Sept 5th and I'm hoping to have 8-10 volunteers join me. As with any volunteerism I always encourage volunteers to learn more about the organization - please click on the below link to learn more:

http://www.fullercenterarmenia.org/en/get-involved/int-v

When you have time take a look at the site to learn more and of course let me know if you have any questions. I'm always available to answer any potential volunteers questions and understand that not everyone can commit to a 10 day volunteer effort. If you know of anyone that may be interested please don't hesitate in letting me know.

Please Note: The schedule for my build is available on the site. On the schedule I've provisioned for a couple of day's R&R such that new comers to the region can also take time out to see the sites
With
more than 400 concert performances across Europe, USA and the Balkans, The
Tavitjan Brothers are the finest and most acclaimed Armenian musicians from Macedonia.
DIRECTIONS
The music range of these superb musicians starts
from mainstream jazz to fusion, ethno and electronic elements in a modern
manner with accents on virtuosity from each musician involved.

Diran Tavitjan (piano) and Garo Tavitjan
(drums) started playing music since 7 years old.
They were immediately attracted to jazz music and have complete music education
and academy diplomas in Macedonia.
Later they both received scholarships from the Berklee College of Music. They
have performed in numerous international festivals and concerts worldwide and
received a number of international music awards.

Their original music and performance was highly
estimated by several worldwide
music critics as well as by the world's greatest
jazz magazines. A recent CD Release won an award at the International Music
Competition organized by SONYJAZZ (UK).

Tavitjan Brothers are well known as jazz
composers, performers and music producers
of the highest level who have played on the same
stage with jazz giants like Joe Zawinull, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, The Blues
Brothers, Rhani Krija (STING), Mo Pleasure, Theodosii Spassov, Branford
Marsalis, Roseanna Vitro, and more. With their long, continuous work, Tavitjan
Brothers earned their place as the leading musicians from Macedonia.

                                        Armenian.
Egyptian. American.
Singer. Dancer. Poet
Written and performed by Nora Armani

Friday, September 17, 8PM

Cairo in the 60's, Hollywood in the 80's, London
in the 90's...

With humor and nostalgia, Nora remembers the Bosphorus and Istanbul,
pre-1915 Anatolian summers, Alexandria and its port, Nasser's post
revolution Egypt, Hollywood and its follies, even the Scottish
Highlands.
NOW, IF SHE COULD ONLY REMEMBER HERSELF. Told through song and dance,
with laughter and tears, Nora Armani's self-penned 'On the Couch' is a
one-woman piece about identity, belonging, multiple cultural provenances
and life coincidences that bring us where we are and make us who we
are.

Now adding Cape May, NJ to the
list, Armani has performed 'On the Couch' in Paris, London, Cairo, New
York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, Houston,
Montreal and Geneva, in both its English and French versions.

                                  'An insightful piece of theatre.
The lyrical language.reflects her linguistic talents. Armani manages to
fill the stage and gives an enlightening performance.' -Camden New
Journal
                                   '.the deft, bedazzling Armani
creates textured charactered and substantial momentum.' -Los Angles
Times
