He will review Jerusalem’s liturgical, monastic, and theological contributions to the fledgling church in Armenia, as part of the rich heritage of this community that thrived through the centuries as the earliest of the Armenian diasporas. The lecture will conclude with a description of the present situation and a reflection on what the future holds for the community and the historic Patriarchate.
Dr. Abraham Terian, who grew up in Jerusalem and whose earlier Graduate education was in archeology and history of antiquity, is Professor Emeritus of Armenian Theology and Patristics at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary, New Rochelle, New York.
Abstract: There are numerous reasons for the housing problems in Armenia. The 1988 earthquake devastated the whole northeastern region and the result was tremendous pain and agony for thousands of families and it is still ongoing for many. The Soviet heritage and practice of building codes is another reason, which has resulted in deteriorating building structures and has caused problems in a host of homes. The Artsakh war has devastated regions of the new republic and many families are still in need of descent living conditions. Finally, the economic crisis has also played its part, making it impossible for a great number of families to put their crumbling homes together. The presentation will address the housing conditions in various regions of Armenia, the numerous complaints about living conditions coming for households, the impact of poor housing on children’s health, based on research findings, as well as analyze different target groups of housing issues. Also presented will be the various types of housing needs, which are being addressed by the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia (FCHA), and the positive results received thus far through the solutions implemented in regions of Armenia.

Admission is Free. Wine and Cheese Reception to follow. For more information, call (818) 243-4112.

'The Mother of Jerusalem is Crying' is a sweeping historical novel that begins in 19th Century Armenia, then under Turkish control, and tells the interwoven stories of three families - Christian, Jewish and Muslim - over three continents. The story describes their lives in terms of their traditions, triumphs and tragedies, and how they contended with the violence of the Armenian Genocide, World War Two, the Holocaust, and the founding of Israel. Many of the characters do not survive the enveloping violence. Despite these tragedies, the message of this book is hopeful. The story illustrates that people of different faiths can live together, marry, and raise happy children. Ordinary people, perhaps more than their political leaders, have the capacity to bring an end to the suffering and death that mark our time.
Ballistic Comedy Show hosted by Ara Basil USA, CA-South Los Angeles Sun, 19 Feb 2012 7PM

Organizer: Ara Basil - Contact Organizer.
Event Type: Comedy / Admission: $20
Location: The Comedy Store 8433 Sunset Boulevard
Unified Young Armenians (UYA), Inc. have organized a protest at the Azeri Consulate for the 24th Anniversary of the Sumgait massacres.

Los Angeles, CA. February 27, 2012 Pogroms, beatings, and ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Azerbaijan escalated to inconceivable meas...ures 24 years ago, on February 27, 1988, in Sumgait. UYA has organized a protest to mark the anniversary of the Sumgait massacres and end the Azeri Genocidal Campaign.

On Monday, February 27, 2012, at 10:00 AM, UYA has planned a protest at the Azerbaijan Consulate, located at: 11766 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90025.

The Sumgait tragedy and its bloody repetitions in Azerbaijan, lasting through the years of 1988 to 1991, led to the disappearance of 450,000 inhabitants living in an established Armenian community in Azerbaijan. It stimulated the military aggression against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh from 1992 until 1994, as the latter pushed for peaceful demands for self-determination.

Dozens of Armenians were killed, majority of whom were set on fire alive, after being beaten and tortured. Hundreds of innocent people recieved injuries of varying severity. Women, among them minors, were raped.

In his address to the Supreme Council of the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Region, a leader of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, Mr. Hidayat Orujev, stated days before the massacre of Armenians in Sumgait: 'If you do not stop campaigning for the unification of Nagorno Karabakh with Armenia, and if you do not sober up, 100,000 Azeris from neighboring districts will break into your houses, torch your apartments, rape your women, and kill your children.' This same Orujev is currently the Chairman of the State Committee for Work and Religious Organization for the Republic of Azerbaijan.

UYA is a non-profit grassroots youth organization. It is non-partisan and non-religious. UYA's goal is to encourage activism among the Armenian youth, while advocating justice and human rights. It upholds the power of knowledge and education. UYA's mission is to serve the collective good and promote a world free of genocides.
Stepan Partamian presents his latest publications USA, CA-South Glendale Thu, 01 Mar 2012 8:00pm

Organizer: Abril Bookstore - Contact Organizer.
Between 1717, when Mekhitar of Sepastia (1676-1749), born Gomidas Keumurjian and a convert to Catholicism, arrived in Venice with seventeen followers, and 1816, when the Lazarian College was founded in Moscow, the Mekhitarist monastery, established on the island of San Lazzaro in Venice, was the major center of Armenian culture worldwide. The event is free and open to the public. Mekhitar’s program for uplifting the Armenian people consisted of three projects: 1) the unification of the Armenian with the Roman Catholic Church; 2) the introduction of the new learning of the European Enlightenment to the Armenian people; and 3) the presentation to Western scholarship of the achievements of Armenian culture. To accomplish these goals Mekhitar placed his faith in education and publication. The Mekhitarist Congregation, from its two monasteries in Venice and Vienna, still operates a network of schools in Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. The Mekhitarist monastery on San Lazzaro remains one of the major centers of Armenian culture in the world.
Five more received the “gift of hearing”

Just before the year ended, four young children and one young adult received the “gift of hearing” due to the efforts of Armenian International Medical Fund (AIM Fund). Even though the “switch on” of the cochlear implants took place on December 24th, 2011, the surgeries were performed a month before. AIM Fund’s 9th medical mission took place in November 2011 by a team of volunteers from UCLA: Akira Ishiyama, MD., Salpy Akaragian, RN-BC, MN, Don Kawachi and Shant Shekherdimian, M.D. The cochlear implant surgeries were performed at the Erebouni Medical Center in Yerevan, Armenia, under the leadership of Arthur Shukuryan, M.D. Most of the patients were children under 5 years old, two of which were identified through neonatal hearing screening that is performed on all newly born infants in Armenia.

In addition to the surgeries, during this mission “state of the art” virtual training took place at the Armenian International Ear Center located at Erebouni Medical Center. The chosen fellow, Gayane Sargsyan, and other ENT specialists practiced drilling temporal bones (part of the skull near the ear) under the guidance tutorship of well-known cochlear implant surgeon and Professor Dr. Akira Ishiyama.

Although these surgeries are free of charge to the patients, the implants are quite costly. The implants are funded by AIM Fund and the Armenian Government, specifically the Minister of Health Harutyun Kushkyan, MD. As of today, 49 children and young adults are able to enjoy sounds of nature, the voices of their loved ones and other joyful sounds due to the successful results of their cochlear implant surgeries.

AIM Fund’s cochlear implant project requires a strong infrastructure, incredible leadership, countless volunteers and a meaningful budget. AIM fund plans to continue giving the “gift of hearing” to more children in 2012. To accomplish this goal, a fund raising event is scheduled for March 11, 2012 at Pandora on Green Restaurant at 5:30pm. For more information, please contact AIM Fund at (818) 257-8998 and/or visit www.armenianimf.org. With your support, countless more children and young adults will be able to hear and have their lives transformed. Please help AIM Fund make their dreams come true!
ARA BASIL'S 'BALLISTIC' COMEDY SHOW 8 USA, CA-South Los Angeles Fri, 16 Mar 2012 7PM

Organizer: Ara Basil - Contact Organizer.
Event Type: Comedy / Admission: $30; $50
Location: Comedy Store 8433 Sunset Blvd.
