<br>The Bay Area Armenian National Committee Presents:Armenian Organization and Ideology under Ottoman Rulea book by Dikran KaligianArmenian Organization and Ideology under Ottoman Rule is a first-of-its kind book, providing a comprehensive picture of Armeno-Turkish relations for the short but pivotal period of Ottoman rule between 1908 and 1914, leading up to the Armenian Genocide. The author examines the interactions between Ottoman Empire's governing party, the Committee for Union and Progress and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, through internal ARF documents, existing research on the last years of the empire, as well as the archives of the British, American, and German diplomatic corps. By describing unofficial contacts, political relations, and provincial administration and conditions, Kaligian provides an important account of this key period in Ottoman history, resolving many conflicting assumptions about the political relations between the parties.Dr. Dikran Mesrob Kaligian has taught history at Clark University and Regis, Westfield State, and Wheaton colleges. He is past chairperson of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Eastern Region and Managing Editor of the Armenian Review. He received his Ph. D. in history from Boston College. His book, 'Armenian Organization and Ideology under Ottoman Rule, 1908-1914' was published in 2009 by Transaction Publishing.Armenian Organization and Ideology under Ottoman Rule will be available for purchase at the event.<br>

<br>Sponsored by the Glendale Public Library. Co-sponsored the Ararat-Eskijian Museum, the Organization of Istanbul Armenians, and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR). In 2005, Osman K&#xf6;ker first came to international attention when he organized the unprecedented exhibition &#x201c;Sireli Yeghpayrs (My Dear Brother)&#x201d; in Istanbul. Eventually seen by thousands of people, it presented photographs of Armenian life in pre-genocide Ottoman Turkey, drawn from a large collection of postcards owned by the collector Orlando Calumeno. In the five years since then, the exhibition has also been mounted in Paris, Munich, Koln, Frankfurt, and last year in Yerevan. K&#xf6;ker originally intended to write a book about Armenian life in the Ottoman Empire, but with the discovery of the postcard collection the scope of the project changed. Following the exhibition he published the massive and beautifully-produced volume 100 Y&#xfd;l &#xd6;nce T&#xfc;rkiye&#x2019;de Ermeniler, subsequently published in English as Armenians in Turkey 100 Years Ago, featuring hundreds of images showing where and how Armenians in the Ottoman Empire lived. Osman K&#xf6;ker was also involved in the creation in 1996 of the Istanbul Turkish-Armenian daily Agos and Aras Publishing House, the only publishing house which publishes books in Armenian and books translated into Turkish from the Armenian. This will be his first public presentation in the United States. <br>Where: 3400 N. Beachwood Dr., Hollywood, CA 90068. Take Beachwood Drive north from Franklin. Don't veer off of Beachwood because it looks like you're going away from the sign!
The Plan: Meet at the start of the Hollyridge Trail. That's right next to the parking lot. We'll hike up to the sign, take a break, then head back down.

What to bring:
Sunscreen Water Snack in case you get hungry
Parking: There is a very small parking lot right at the trailhead. Additional parking is available along the road, but read the signs to make sure you aren't parking in a permit-only zone. Parking is scarce,
Note: This hike takes us to the back of the sign. As mentioned above, it's the only legal hike for the sign. There is a fence between the path and the sign, and there are tons of cameras monitoring, and you WILL get arrested and/or fined if they catch you hopping the fence.

Event date may change. Check this link to be sure! http://www.meetup.com/The-Los-Angeles-Armenian-Culture-Meetup-Group/calendar/12121994/<br>

In 1975 Ruth Thomasian began her quest for photographs in order to visually document the people and places of her Armenian heritage. Now, some thirty-five years and 35,000 photographs later, due to Ruth&#x2019;s perseverance, these unique images and their stories have been preserved and documented. They represent our rich Armenian heritage from all over the world during the last 150 years. Ruth has developed Project SAVE Armenian Photograph Archives into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax-exempt organization with a professional staff and board of directors.
Through exhibits, lectures, publications, and research opportunities, Project SAVE provides the general public and scholars with a rare glimpse of Armenian life and culture and provides historical reference points for future generations. The work of Project SAVE Archives is an important contribution to understanding life in both Historic Armenia and the Diaspora from the 1860s to the present.
All are welcome to attend this free event and meet and honor Ruth Thomasian. The program will take place first at Sheen Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception in the Ararat-Eskijian Museum. Both are located on the campus of the Ararat Home in Mission Hills.

Wine and Cheese Reception to follow. The Five Melikdoms of Karabagh [Khamsayi Melikoutiunneru] was written by the great Armenian novelist Raffi in 1881. This is the brilliantly told story of a unique, isolated part of Armenia and its people that, despite all the tumultuous events that have encompassed it, have survived and still exists today. The Five Melikdoms of Karabagh is filled with the deeds of the Armenian rulers of Karabagh and its people and, in Raffi&#x2019;s inimitable style, details all events that transpired there and in the Caucasus in the decisive years from 1600 to 1827. The great historian Leo (Arakel Babakhanian), himself from Karabagh, dedicated his work A Pilgrim&#x2019;s Memoirs to Raffi, saying: '&#x2026;you have not forgotten to honour Karabagh, dedicating a part of your brilliant work to it, bringing forth its history from the darkness of oblivion and, with your wonderful style made us, the real inhabitants of that land, understand all that we knew nothing about&#x2026;' This book should be of great interest to those those who are genuinely interested in modern Armenian and Caucasian history. <br>

It is a valuable contribution to history and highly appropriate in the wake of the House Foreign Affairs Committee&#x2019;s recent recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the uphill battle awaiting the passage of the Genocide Resolution in the full House. The book signing will take place in &#x201c;Kouyoumjian Hall,&#x201d; at 1510 E. Mountain St., Glendale, CA 91207. The event will include a reception.<br>

Except for a short period after the end of the First World War and the ensuing armistice, Turkey has consistently denied that it ever employed a policy of intentional destruction of Armenians. Th e 1913-1914 census put the number of Armenians living in Turkey at close to two million. Today only a few thousand Armenians remain in the city Istanbul and none elsewhere in Turkey. Armenian sites in Turkey, including churches, have been neglected, desecrated, looted, destroyed, or requisitioned for other uses, while Armenian place names have been erased or changed. As with the Jewish Holocaust, Armenian properties that were seized or stolen have not been restored. Sixty and ninety years after these terrible events, Jewish and Armenian victims and their heirs continue to struggle to get their properties back. Th ere has been only partial restitution in the Jewish case and virtually no restitution at all in the Armenian case. No adequate reparation for the deeds committed against the Armenians can ever be made. But resolving claims with respect to stolen property is a symbolic gesture toward victims and their heirs. This is unfinished business for Jewish heirs and survivors of the Holocaust, as it is for Armenians. A Perfect Injustice is an essential contribution to understanding why the issue of stolen Armenian wealth remains unresolved after all these years&#x2014;a topic addressed for the first time in this volume.<br>

Professor Taner Ak&#xe7;am, a leading genocide scholar and one of the few Turkish historians to unequivocally affirm the Armenian genocide, and Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marion Mugar Chair in Modern Armenian History and Genocide Studies at Clark University, will host 'The State of the Art of Armenian Genocide Research: Historiography, Sources and Future Directions.' The Arsham and Charlotte Ohanessian Chair at the University of Minnesota&#x2019;s College of Liberal Arts (Prof. Eric Weitz) and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) are co-sponsors.
As is common with scholarship on mass murder, the first researchers and scholars to document the Armenian genocide were survivors of it. They gathered documentation, compiled memoirs, and published these materials in a systematic way, initially primarily in Armenian. Following hundreds of publications on the subject in many languages and decades later, study of the Armenian Genocide has transitioned to academically trained specialists. It can now be said that the Armenian genocide, widely known as the 'forgotten genocide,' has rightfully taken an important place within the area of genocide studies.
Assembling eminent scholars of genocide, 'The State of the Art of Armenian Genocide Research: Historiography, Sources, and Future Directions' will provide an overview of the state of research and the material available in various archives. The organizers aim to create serious discussion around the main problems and the fundamental questions of the field. World events demonstrate that a contested past has the power to influence present-day politics. Cooperation between distinguished scholars will make history a tool for reconciliation rather than an impediment to that end. The Strassler Center workshop, planned to coincide with the annual commemoration of the Armenian Genocide, will make clear that denial is no longer an option.
Further information about the workshop The State of the Art of Armenian Genocide Research: Historiography, Sources, and Future Directions will be available in the coming months. A public program will take place on April 9, while the remaining sessions will be limited to workshop participants. <br>

Build Homes and Tour Armenia - June 7-21, 2010

Armenia &#x2013; an ancient homeland along the Old Spice Route,
a fabled Garden of Eden, the first country to adopt Christianity &#x2013; is an
emerging democracy in need of safe, affordable housing. The Fuller Center for Housing's
Global Builders program in Armenia assists those who still struggle from the
devastating 1988 earthquake and strive to establish a free economy.

Join a two-week Global Builders team and enjoy the richness of Armenia and its
generous people in a remarkable way &#x2013; by working side by side with families to
construct decent housing. Travel Armenia&#x2019;s historic roads to see pre-Christian
sites, 3rd century churches, green pastures, colorful marketplaces, and
dramatic mountain gorges. Learn about Armenia's captivating history and culture
while importantly, helping a needy family achieve their lifelong dream of a
healthy home. You will come away with more than you give, with more than you
ever hoped to receive.

Experienced Global Village Team Leaders have traveled regularly to Armenia to
build homes since 2003. No construction experience is necessary - there's a job
suitable for everyone. Hotel, all meals, in-country transportation, building
materials, and insurance for this trip are $1,600 per person each for a team of
eight people. Our hotels are the newly renovated Erebuni Hotel in Yerevan (see
http://erebunihotel.am/eng/h.html) and Green House Hotel in Vanadzor (see
http://visitarm.com/Vanadzor-Green-Hotel.html).

Fuller Center for Housing was established by
the founders of Habitat for Humanity, to carry out the original mission of
providing housing through sweat equity and no-interest loans. For more
information on Fuller Center for Housing Armenia, see http://www.fullercenterarmenia.org/get-involved/int-v

Accommodations are double to triple occupancy rooms with
private baths in a hotel. Breakfast is served in the hotel. Lunches are served at the building site,
and dinners are at various local restaurants.
The hotels are simple, but have basic
amenities including showers, sinks, and flush toilets.

The in-country trip cost from $1,600 which
includes all lodging, food, ground transportation, cultural tours, orientation materials, traveler&#x2019;s
medical insurance, transfers to and from the
Yerevan airport (EVN), and a donation to FCHA.
The donation covers building materials,
operating costs, and staff assistance
during our trip. Participants will need to arrange and pay for transportation from their point
of departure to Armenia, passport, visa, and
